Rottnest Island | Day Trip Itinerary

Hi,

Ever dream of being surround by clear waters, great company and the happiest animals on earth? Welcome to Rottnest Island.

Myself and my partner Jordan recently visited Rottnest during the summer, which has gave us the experience of feeling both the winter and summer seasons here.

If you’re a couple living in or visiting Perth, this could be your next day trip organised!

Plan the perfect Rottnest Island itinerary with our guide to top beaches, bike routes, dining spots & quokka selfies. The best tips for a seamless trip!

Transport

Unfortunately you can’t drive to Rottnest Island for your day trip, however you do still have 3 options.

Ferry

From Perth you have two docking options: Hillary’s boat harbour and Fremantle docks.

We have personally tried both options and had equally positive experiences with both operators.

Rottnest Express- Fremantle

Rottnest Fast Ferries, dock from Hillary’s boat harbour, which is a 24km & 27 minute drive from Perth CBD.

Vs

Rottnest Express, docking from Fremantle, 19km from Perth CBD and often a 25-30 minute drive depending on city traffic.

Almost equal distance, which do I prefer? If I fancy a bite to eat when I return, I’d go with Hilary’s as the food scene there is very convenient. Whereas, I would dock from Fremantle again if I wanted to go out for a meal and few drinks.

Helicopter/ Plane

We have never personally used this mode of transport to visit Rottnest but I will link Rottnest Islands official website below!

Bike Rental

Rottnest is famous for its gorgeous scenic bike trails, exploring the entire island.

We’ve opted for an electric bike both times and loved it. Using two different services, one from Fremantle and the other in house on Rottnest island.

Pedal and Flipper allows you to book in advance and collect your bike when you’ve arrived on the island. When you disembark from the ferry, you’ll walk 7 minutes to collect your bike!

Tiller Rides is based in Fremantle, at the docks. It’s very conveniently located beside the Rottnest Express. In our experience, all three of us struggled to remove the batteries when boarding the ferry on both occasions. Also, take note you have to book your bikes on the ferry in advance!

Which is better? Personally for convenience I would spend the extra money using Pedal and Flipper as you don’t have to bring it on the ferry. However, I would use Tiller Rides again if I wanted to spend the day exploring Fremantle!

Itinerary

Morning

I’d recommend getting the early ferry and make the most of your day!

  • Breakfast/ coffee at dome

You’ll often find some Quokka’s around here, perfect opportunity for a selfie!

  • Swim/ snorkel/ sunbathe at Little Salmon Bay

Get here as early as possibly, beat the crowds and the UV.

  • Spot dolphins at West End viewpoint

Afternoon

If you visit during summer this will be the hottest part of the day, we chose to stay in the shade and cool down!

  • Wadjemup Lighthouse

They do tours on the history of Rottnest, we popped into the free visitor centre, to have a shade break and soak in some local history.

  • Lunch or picnic at Wadjemup Lighthouse

There are plenty of picnic tables around this area to have your own lunch or there is a great coffee cart at the lighthouse! We got some cold drinks here and we overheard the owner paying it forward for one of the local volunteer tour guides!

  • Pink Lake & Vincent Lake

Follow the bike trail to have a look at the freshwater lakes on the island!

Evening

If you’re doing a day trip, this is the perfect opportunity to wind down before your 5pm boat home.

  • Parakeet Bay

A nice quiet cove to end your day on the beach.

  • The Mezz bar & restaurant

Grab a drink or bite to eat here, it’s right beside the jetty where you’ll catch your ferry home! The stock Gage Road brewery ciders and beers, and my personal favourite Matso’s ginger beer. Plus, you’ll catch loads of Quokka’s here!
