Margaret River Region | Guide to Each Region

Hi,

I can’t help but rave about the Margaret River Region, it’s a true gem!

With stunning coastlines, lush forests, amazing wineries, and a vibrant food scene, it’s a place that’ll steal your heart.

Many say “there’s not much to do in Margaret River,” but it’s the whole region that makes it special!

This is a 101 guide to each region, to give you the full magical experience we have every time.

Busselton

Welcome to Busselton, a charming coastal town full of friendly locals and natural beauty!

Here, you’ll find the infamous Busselton Jetty is a must-see, stretching 3.6 km. You can walk the jetty or take the powered train to the unique underwater observatory, 1/6 aquariums of its kind in the world.

Descend 8 meters below to the ocean floor and prepare to be mesmerised by the vibrant colours and busy sea life. Entry is around $40 for adults, and it’s well worth it.

If you time it right, the sunset from the jetty is magical, one of our first wow moments when we moved here.

Afterward, make sure to stop by Cod Rocks for some local fish to complete your visit. Let’s be honest you can’t visit a seaside town and not have a bag of fish and chips for dinner!

Dunsborough

I’ve already dedicated an entire blog to Dunsborough, which you can check out below, but just know.

This is without a doubt best spot of them all, well at least in my opinion!

Margaret River

Margaret River town is a small vibrant area which thrives on local businesses. World class wineries, boutiques shops, a thriving cafe culture, craft breweries and so much more, you’re in a foodies paradise!

While I appreciate the beauty of wineries they just aren’t my thing, but I love the food scene here. Particularly The Common, 5 minutes away from the town and its casual dining heaven.

Their fish tacos and chicken salt fries, paired perfectly with a hoppy IPA, is just what the doctor order.

Best part? It’s right next to Gnarabup Beach, to enjoy the sunset and waves after your meal.

For a unique adventure, head to Mammoth Cave for a self-guided tour. Pick up a headset and explore the massive caves filled with over 10,000 fossils.

I’d recommend bringing a hoodie- the caves can be chilly, especially outside summer.

The scenic drive through Marri and Karri forests adds to the magic on your way there!

Augusta

A small, peaceful, coastal town called Augusta is 30 minute drive south of Margaret River town.

We haven’t fully explored all that Augusta has to offer, but what we’ve seen so far was bliss!

Flinders Bay stole our hearts with its small sandy patches, scattered stones, and endless blue ocean, perfect for a chill morning sunbathing. It really felt like we were back in Ireland for the day.

Just 5 minutes from Flinders Bay is the Augusta Boat Harbour, home to a huge farmers market for food lovers. We shopped locally here to enjoy a picnic at our last stop in Augusta!

Visiting Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is a MUST! It is where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet.

Lastly, don’t miss Hamelin Bay with its striking greens and blues. Although we didn’t spot the stingrays like many do, the views made our trip unforgettable. We also had a lovely picnic here taking it all in.

Summary

I think it’s fair to say Western Australia’s Southwest, is beautiful.

From must-visit spots in Dunsborough, Busselton, Margaret River and Augusta to the enjoying the local cuisine dining out or picnicking from their markets the whole region is a great time.

I hope this guide helps you find the magic in the Margaret River Region too!
